external radiotherapy of intact breast: a comparison between 2d (single ct- slice) and 3d (full ct-slices) plans
Authors
abstract
background: tangential irradiation of intact breast is one of the most common procedures performed in any radiotherapy center. this method is performed by using 2d and 3d treatment planning. the aim of this study was to compare 2d with 3d plans in breast conserving radiotherapy. homogeneity of isodose, and lung received dose were compared. materials and methods: twenty patients with breast cancer undergoing lumpectomy were included in this study. two dosimetry plans were generated for each patient. the first plan was performed on one ct-slice (central) by using eclipse-tps. the second plan was based on full ct-slices using the same tps. for both plans, the volumes receiving lower than 95% (cold areas), greater than 105% (hot areas) of the reference dose and the volume of lung receiving ≥30gy (vol≥30gy) were derived from dose volume histogram (dvh). all calculations were done for 6mv photon beams. results: by the 2d plans, the mean values of cold and hot areas were 26.4% and 8.1%, respectively. these values were reduced to 18.9% and 6.9% in 3d plans, respectively (p<0.000, p<0.01). dose homogeneity was obtained 65.4% in the 2d and improved to 74.8% in the 3d plans (p<0.000). by the use of 3d plans, received dose within lung volume was decreased to 6.7% as compared with 8.9% of 2d plans (p<0.01). conclusion: application of 3d plans can lead to a more tumor control probability and cosmetic results, but less skin and lung side effects in patients with conserved breast. iran. j. radiat. res., 2011 9(2): 121-125

full textThe Comparison 2D and 3D Treatment Planning in Breast Cancer Radiotherapy with Emphasis on Dose Homogeneity and Lung Dose
Introduction: Breast conserving radiotherapy is one of the most common procedures performed in any radiation oncology department. A tangential parallel-opposed pair is usually used for this purpose. This technique is performed using 2D or 3D treatment planning systems. The aim of this study was to compare 2D treatment planning with 3D treatment planning in tangential irradiation in breast conse...
full textCompression of multi-slice CT: 2D vs. 3D JPEG 2000 and effects of slice thickness
The widespread use of multi-detector CT scanners has been associated with a remarkable increase in the number of CT slices as well as a substantial decrease in the average thickness of individual slices. This increased number of thinner slices has created a marked increase in archival and network bandwidth requirements associated with storage and transmission of these studies. We demonstrate th...
full textComputerized treatment planning in radiation therapy of intact breast: influence of number of CT-cuts.
PURPOSE To compare the accuracy of 2D algorithm with an established 3D algorithm, and to define the number of CT-slices needed for treatment planning of intact breast irradiation. MATERIAL AND METHODS Twenty patients with breast cancer treated with conservative surgery were included in this study, ten of them had right breast cancer and the other 10 patients had cancer of the left breast. For...
full textThe position and orientation of total knee replacement components: a comparison of conventional radiographs, transverse 2D-CT slices and 3D-CT reconstruction.
We studied the intra- and interobserver reliability of measurements of the position of the components after total knee replacement (TKR) using a combination of radiographs and axial two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) reconstructed CT images to identify which method is best for this purpose. A total of 30 knees after primary TKR were assessed by two independent observers (an orthopa...
full textComparison between Rendering 3d-ct and Transparent 3d-ct in Acl Tunnel Positioning
OBJECTIVE To compare the transparent 3D computed tomography (CT) image protocol against conventional 3D-CT image-rendering protocol to assess femoral tunnel position in anatomic anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstructions . METHODS Eight knee CT scans from cadavers were analyzed by image rendering 3D-CT protocol, using Rhinoceros(r) software. The central point of the ACL tunnel was set u...
